1 year in Korea...

It will be one year on September 1st and... I'm planning on staying another year. Woo! This blog hasn't been updated for almost a year. Eek... All I can say is that a lot happened and perhaps I'll journal it in comics someday- when I grow up... ahem... I'm super thankful for those who were there when I needed them, and for all their love and support. Super thankful...

So, I haven't been drawing all too much. :( I do, however, sometimes draw on my marker board at the academy to provide my students a better understanding of things. The kids that I teach are talented, too, and a few students would sometimes add to my drawings. It's been fun.

I have recently drawn something for Yvonne. I met her at Phoenix ComiCon of 2010 and we became friends on Facebook. She's super nice and super talented. A few days ago she asked me to help her design a banner for her Etsy store, www.dollfromtheattic.etsy.com. I worked with her concept and she provided me sketches of what she wanted. I drew first in pencil and colored it on PhotoShop- something I haven't touched in a while. Here is the end result of our collaboration:

Why, hello, blog. It's been a while since I've seen you... I'm not sure if I ever mentioned it... but are you following me on twitter? http://twitter.com/kiwimomo

After spending six months in Phoenix and life in Tucson, Arizona, I needed out and decided to teach English as a second language in Korea. I needed the change of scenery, and I figured it's a good time to travel and turn things around. As I teach every day in Korea, I am learning something new and it feels fulfilling as I help the kids and make sure they're happy and enjoying life as much as possible... Secondly, there is CUTE all over! Even the illustrations in the text books are aesthetically pleasing. So there is more than plenty to supplement my love for art. Perhaps, I'll look into furthering my education in Korea... First, I need to learn Korean...

I miss everybody, I love my family, I love my friends, I love Sam, and I wish I can share my experiences with all of you. So far, I've walked through the Hwaseong Fortress; wore slippers all the time during work; picked up Korean words here and there; ate amazing food; went to a festival celebrating tall grass; experienced saunas and public baths; got scrubbed by older ladies; received puhang (fire-cupping suction treatment); experienced the Korean metro system; made friends with amazing kids and amazing people... and I met my family that I haven't seen in over 12 years! I'm still not used to having so much family... and twin cousins! I'll soon be going to a cousin's wedding! Ahh!

Artwise: I don't have a scanner, the scanner at the school isn't working, and I'm not really planning on purchasing... so I'll be honing on my tablet skills ^^; I'm really not used to it... You can see a bit of evidence here:

Halloween: Throwing the Halloween party for the kids was a treat, and I wish the party lasted longer (it only lasted for an hour and a half)... It made me feel a bit homesick... Here are the Halloween posters I did for my school... I used pastels, and they were handled without fixative... so they're a bit smeary.

Ha... my director wanted me to write, "Come On."

Honey Bunches of Sam, Chris and Oats

I drew this up with Sam and Chris at a Barnes & Noble about a week ago.

While writing e-mails and researching on teaching English in Korea, I ate a bowl of Honey Bunches of Oats, hence the title of this blog. I'm kind of getting tired of Honey Bunches of Oats (and it used to be my favorite cereal too) but I can never get tired of that one nutella cereal in Italy (damnation). I got a call from a recruiter in Korea a few days ago, and they found a teaching job for me in Osan City. I'm excited but a little nervous. It's been over 12 years since I've been to Korea. I was in the fifth grade and crazy about Sailor Moon, and wherever I went there was Sailor Moon merchandise... It was the only time I ever saw my Korean family and it was one of the greatest times of my life. I am probably remembered as a funny looking brat though. Anyway...

I'm Etsying it up again, and selling some chum bears that I crochet and hand make into chumming goodness. Sam and I sold these at the Phoenix Comicon in May, 2010. I can do custom orders too. WOO! http://www.etsy.com/shop/kiwimomo27

Oh, I am also working on a short six page comic collaboration with Sam. It's going to be lots of fun! Plus, Chu Chu Chums is doing a back and forth comic, where Sam and I take turns doing 2 panels. I must say that it is a rather surprising story and I hope that we have readers, haha.

It was good. Sam and I had a very good first time experience. We teamed up as Chu Chu Chums and sold our mini comics, bears, pins and totes. Surely, for next time, we'll have more on the table. We sort of sold out on some of the items on the second day. We really didn't know what to expect, we had no idea how big the table will be, or that the table cloth was going to be included, or how many people would come by. You can look at our recap here. I never actually got to take pictures of my crocheted chum bears until we got to the con and after I sold both of the Awesome bears. But Miss Heidi took a picture of him and... well, well... it looks like he's chumming up with a cat!

Oh, and here's the cover of my newest mini-comic- also sold at our table at Phoenix Comicon... ;)

I'll also be exhibiting in an art show - Sensory Overload - on July 10 @ Lulubell's Toy Store / Art Gallery in Tucson (6th St. & 6th Ave.)

Hi there folks~! Long time no see! Ugh... I'm now living in Phoenix- not much of a change in scenery but it's still different than Tucson... and away from a secure home, adorable puppies, yummy food, TV, constant internet connection, and everything else annoying and nice. Although my family is not too crazy about my starving artist lifestyle, they still gave me the support to get me started and keep me going... so I'm grateful for them... anywayyyyy... Ah, I'm running out of time. Currently, I lack internet at my place, so I'm taking advantage of Border's free wifi.

Sam Laggren and I are Chu Chu Chums and we will be doing a table at the Phoenix Comic Con. You can check it out some more, here. I'm sooooo excited!! I have mini comics and surprising things to sell... Now, I'd like some feedback... I did this sort of cover thing for a nonexistent comic... I'm wondering if I could sell it as a print, maybe? Yes? No?

Yes, it's been a while... and it's kind of late right now... it is 1:31 AM. My sleeping schedule has been weird- but so has every thing else... Yay, it's 2010! 2009 was a great year... but a terrible year too! I can't decide... @_@ 2009 = the very best and the worst of times... I made some good friends, graduated, studied abroad in Italy, had a bunch of gelato... then went to San Diego Comic Con, lost confidence, acquired ultra sadness, and had difficulty finding a worthwhile job- Unfortunately, however, I'm still in the same position. u_u BUT it's OK, guys, I'm persevering, still drawing, living and eating... but not sure if my parents want to keep me around anymore. It's been hard, but I'm pretty sure it is hard for some others too. Yay, starving artist, FIGHT OHH!! I chose this lifestyle, so I must keep working harder. Although there are so many things that put you and I down, it still doesn't really do any good to be mopey about things... so keep going! YEAH!

So en route to starving (surviving) artist awesomeness, I designed postcards to send out to multiple art directors, editors, and maybe publishers of magazines. I should've done this before I graduated... oops... So I am doing it now!

And I'll be among the independent art exhibitors at the Phoenix Comic Con in May with Sam Laggren! Eek! I'm excited... but I have so much work to do. It's quite difficult when I'm mostly focused on other things, argh! I hope things will calm down so that I can get to work! I've started writing a story for a comic I'll be doing- it is going to be a sort of shoujo mangaesque comic, haha. And we've also started an "exquisite corpse" comic. Sooo stoked!

Oh, and I drew this on Photoshop... She's doing the cat's cradle with her hair... *v* Happy New Year!!

24 Hour Comic Day (October 3, 2009)

Staying awake for more than 20 hours with nerds, mid-aged ones and young ones- like Dave & Eric from Modern Mythology Press (I'm sort of in love with these two by the way, although they made fun with my voice and of my boyfriend- who was also comicing next to me ;) heh), being the only female (besides one other who had left a little early), having not seen Sam in a while, remembering events of the past two years, plus forcing myself to do 24 comic pages from scratch were altogether quite overwhelming. As opposed to the other comicers, I simply just like to draw pretty and cute things and putting them into mostly cheesy narratives. I have a lot of catching up to do when it comes to comics, both reading and doing. It was my first time doing this challenge and my first time going to Spazdog Comics in Glendale, Phoenix. I hope to do this challenge unofficially by myself or with other people, though- not just on Oct. 3. The owners were very nice and the shop itself is pretty awesome. The owner, Shawn, did interviews of us... Next time, I hope to not be as nervous and shy... and not as giggly... and the next time I go to an official comic day, I would like to look at everybody else's work- I didn't get to last week, boo... :(

So... I ended up doing a journal comic- of the beginning of my relationship with Sam since 2 years ago. heh heh... It's rushed... and I left early, even before the anticipated donuts... I'm glad I went to this though. It made me really want to make comics! Although I did some crappy pages, still... I ended up doing 15. Not 24, but I never had done that many in one day!

YEAH! Anyway, after you read this, I hope you feel somewhat warm and fuzzy inside... ❤

If you're my friend on Facebook, you have probably seen them, huhu... Hahh, seems the only times I'd journal was when I was mad a couple of times. You can read those if you'd like, but they're kind of embarrassing and don't really encompass the amazing time I had there... Anyway, I enjoy looking back at these and thought I'd share them anyway...

I feel bad for not posting on my blog too often~ and now that I have a web site, I'll be using this more to update on me and things~

Soo... I went to the San Diego Comic-Con for the first time three weeks ago. The top floor of the convention held portfolio reviews, but my portfolio didn't have anything that pertained to what many of them were looking for. It made me realize that I really need to get working and have a bursting portfolio of brilliance that is specific to something I absolutely want to do. Although I just got out of school and should have had acquired an awesome (and more specific) portfolio, mine was still lacking. Right now it is kind of scatter-brained but at least shows my versatility- I thought... Hahaa... However, the people I've talked to were kind enough to offer me their time and advice, and most of them referred me to independent publishers and APE Con... Other than that, I had a lot of fun at the comic-con. There was so much to see and although we've been there for 4 days, we weren't able to see everything... Hopefully the pictures that Sam and I took using his camera will be uploaded soon u_u... I didn't have my camera with me...

Furthermore, while I was in California I was able to visit the Cartoon Network Studios, thanks to a friend who works there as a character designer. Since I am still enrolled at the UofA for another semester I am hoping to do a fall internship there. So in the meantime I'll be working on as many things as I can. I have a site up and running~ I'll probably get all the images up by the end of this week. We'll see~ <3 I am very appreciative of everybody's encouragement~ Thank youu~ <3 T^T

Today I just updated the header with the singing sun... There is a lot more to come! AH!

Annnddd... I'm going to comic-con in San Diego next week... I'm excited and nervous. In the meantime I'll possibly be working on another mini-comic to photocopy and pass out at the con. Yay! On the other hand I have my 8 page book that I've made in Orvieto, plus an exquisite corpse type of book that I am thinking of photocopying and passing out... We'll see...

Before I go off to Italy, having graduated and with more time on my hands, I feel the need to post things here... It seems forever that I haven't... hahhhhh oops... AHH!! I'm so excited though!! I'm leaving in two days!! *v* Hopefully I'll fill up a couple of sketchbooks and fill up 4GB of SD cards with awesome pictures!!I did this in fall of 2008. It's my version of Hanafuda, hwa-to, or Go Stop. It's originally a Japanese card game but I've been brought up thinking it was Korean, but, nope, it's just really popular in Korea and was ever since Japan occupied them. There are 12 suits, each with four corresponding with the months of the year and different flowers. There are normal cards (ones with just flowers), special cards (in the Korean version, I've known them as the kwang cards, or king cards- and they give you a butt load of points), ones with fauna, and ones with poetry scrolls. You receive points as you get certain combinations of them. I hope these are not too hard to decipher, but when I showed my Korean teacher she got all excited and was wondering if I was selling them... One of these days I need to find a way to print them on small plasticish cards- because that is how they are originally made- and I just like the snappy sound when people slam them down and whatnot. Anyway~ the title for these cards is Romancing Cowboy Go! Among these cards is a sequence of a cowboy venturing for love~ in stabilos, microns, and water color~ enjoy~

Last month, I made some toys!! Together they make a series called The Lactosies and live on a floating island of Everdairyland. I made them especially for our last Viscom senior show, we called "Eye Candy," at a toy store called Lulubell Toy Bodega. It is my favorite store in Tucson ever!! I have a few pictures thanks to one of my professors.

Here's some more recent stuff: two litho prints I've done the past couple of months~ The Stream of Consciousness was a challenged litho print with water color on top- (so it's a one of a kind print) & the Thirsty Hungry Map is an edition of 8.

Hey, look! I made a book!! I made it thanks to my artist book and visual narrative class taught by Philip Zimmermann. I used watercolor and ink, scanned the images and used the software provided by blurb.com. Pretty cool stuff... but I'm not doing so hot in my other classes.... *sigh* Haha, oh well, at least this was fun and full of adventure~ Check it out, and thank you for doing so~ I'm really bad about pricing... I hope it's not too expensive... agh... artist books usually tend to be... Cheers~!

For Jackson Boelts' class- UA presents cover illustration- they only chose one to present 2008-2009... at least mine made it to the top 9, heh heh...

Digital Illustration- Jackson Boelts- Transference- I first sewed a teddy bear, took pictures of it then transferred it to Photoshop~ An alternating sequence of a girl having a flashback of her favorite teddy bear being devastated when she was little while eating a cookie in the shape of the teddy bear.

Ok, after I graduate, if art job searching ends up being difficult, I'll be going to Korea to teach English in public schools. Teaching English in Korea had been my dream job since I was little. It's crazy now that it's actually an option for me. I have a couple of friends there, plus family~ plus I'll be able to be forced into practicing Korean- all so very convenient. Traveling at this time will benefit my artistic voice and bestow me with substantial experience~ I want to get out of my comfort zone- I guess, like all the other cool kids, ahaha...

I can't wait to get into the box of Pocky for Men tomorrow when I drive to Phoenix with Sam. I really wonder why it is so manly? Dark chocolate? I still haven't got a chance to have a closer look at it...

Oh, I've started a Twitter account!! I hope it won't take too much of my time--- I'll try to make positive twitters, eh heh...

There have been soooo many projects and several sleepless nights, more than I've ever had!! Agh... I feel like it's (my illustrations and classes) getting better~ I hope it won't die when I'll be sleeping and lazying around during winter break... yeah...

Finally, I've charged my camera battery and took pictures of these to post. Yay, I've posted quite a bit today~ At least I'm being semi-productive... This was supposed to be a portrait assignment- a portrait of anything... I did a portrait of a creepy brat that I've made up myself... Ahaha, a little monster he is, gross and creepy lurking out of darkness... ~done in water color and Copic markers for a little bit, oh, and some white gouache.

Happy happy collage time~ This is our poster assignment. I decided to do a nutritional poster for those who are healthy conscious or whoever wants to be pretty and healthy. ~done in water color, ink, and Copic markers. I first did the surface with water color washes, then I cut out little drawings of fruits, veggies and happy people, pasted them and did the bigger people last. I did paste on some cutout text, however, it wasn't all that great, so I took it off and did the text on the computer.

Biobot assignment: this here is a mushroom bot. He particularly likes flowers, so he waters them, protects them, and sings to them. Mushroom bot has defense mechanisms where he could definitely steam and burn whoever threatens and touches him. He collects water and nutrients through rain and through whatever nature can give him to nourish his flowers. ~done in water color and brownish micron pen.

Brasalina

This illustration is based off of Brasalina, a short story by Poe Ballentine--- done as an assignment for my digital illustration class. The story was told from the little boy's perspective in the 1950s, and this half-Indian Brazilian woman, Brasalina, is very exotic and lively, embracing life as opposed to the little boy's American parents. I wanted to capture the young beauty of Brasalina, her exotic nature, maybe, and her outlook of life. The little boy is sitting next to her, more or less experiencing what life and their surroundings could offer. First, I made a background of a seaside with a moody sunset color scheme on Photoshop, then I cut out the figures painted with water color, plus flower shapes from magazine material. I printed out the background, then pasted these things, scanned it in and worked on top of it with Photoshop. Here, I have two different versions... The first one is the updated version and the second one was what I turned in on Friday. The class didn't like the second one, hahaha, oops... so I had to redo it, whereas I cleaned it (the first one) up and played with it a little more... I hope it's better... I'm not sure if I'm going to turn it in yet... *sigh*

Deindustrialization of America--- this was my interpretation of it... I did this for my Digital Illustration class, taught by Jackson Boelts. I first did it in pen, then water colored it, scanned it and edited it on Photoshop.

I interpreted the deindustrialization of America by referring to the opposite of it- the Industrial Revolution, in which America was known as the 'land of opportunity.' However, as the U.S. consumer culture grew, increasingly U.S manufacturing and facilities are done outside of the country, which in turn caused a few major decreases in jobs. I used China for example, seeing that most of the objects Americans own are made in China. I graphically included details of industry, machinery and things out of a factory on the left side of the composition as to reduce industry, or deindustrialize it, into a laptop, an item in which Americans use to 'work' on whatever they wanted without the need of industrial means. With deindustrialization, the U.S. is left with manufactured goods produced from outside of the U.S. for consumers to buy, rather than a load of job opportunities.

Ah~ but I didn't make it to the critique... I left from my house a couple of hours early to work on a project from another class and ended up getting into a little accident... Some crazy lady wasn't paying attention and was trying to change lanes into my car. I was tired and stupid so instead of slowing down and beeping, I got scared and ran into a curb, which resulted in exploding one tire and creating a big bubble in the other. I beeped after, but she drove on, and faster too... Some computer geek was nice enough to stop by and see what's up, it was during his lunch break, so he was willing to keep me company while I waited for the tow truck and handle all of the phone calls for me~ it was really nice of him... I had to get two tires replaced, agh, and I had to miss all of class... I didn't get to see all of the other projects... ;_; I e-mailed it to my professor... but with very little feedback--- nothing about the piece. *sigh* Well, at least I'm all in one piece and I had no police involved, nor did any damage to any other cars....

^Portrait of August 27th. I went with the idea of doing a journal comic. These were actual events of the day, nothing too exciting, except for the free meal I received that day for having a stupid debit card... I still have yet to pay them back~ oh well, the food was not all that delicious anyway... I probably won't be going there for a long time... maybe forever, ahahaha... agh... This was the first assignment given in Illustration III. It was very fun to do, and something I'd like to continue doing. I'd love to be productive and do a weekly comic... about random things and my oh-so-exciting life...

Agh... so much to do~

Ahhhh... I had my Korean class today... It's only 102~ I already feel so behind, ahaha, soooo sad~ seriously depressing... I have so many other things in my mind that I don't give much thought or time towards it until an hour before the class starts... I feel so bad... I really need to kick it up a notch... stop having fun altogether, maybe... hehehe... or not, I just need to manage time more wisely... *sigh* or not sleep...

I have about 8 to 10 pages to write for Wednesday (double-spaced, yay, XD, but I still despise writing essays) and a quiz on Thursday~ I have to work on a big poster project advertising the best drink in the world (I'm making it up) and there's a digital illustration due on Friday. To finish off this wonderful week, I'll be working, BAH. I will persevere!! FIGHTING!!

I've been given a commission too--- I don't remember how long of a time it has been. This guy, named Tony, who's a chef at my workplace, has been waiting ever so patiently for it, although he has been asking about it every time I see him. It's a portrait of him and his two kids that he has never met. He only has two pictures of them, of which I am referencing from.

My head is throbbing right now, but I still want to finish at least 1 out of 2 essay responses tonight... wahh ahhhhhh...

Digital Illustration #1

This was done for a Portrait project in my Digital Illustration class. I was randomly assigned to do a portrait of someone else in the class and incorporate their 3 or 4 found objects in any way. Since Adrianna's found objects consisted of tree bark, hairlike tree stuff, and twigs, I wanted to do an earthy picture of her. She is also a mother of two kids, so it made me think of drawing her with an ethereal essence with her hair intertwined with things of nature. I would have done many things differently, but I was kind of burned out from other illustration projects, in which I am more proud of... Hopefully I'll be getting those back soon, because I still haven't taken pictures of them and whatnot... Through Adobe Photoshop, I layered some pictures of the bark and twigs that Adrianna took to provide texture for the hair. For her face I used the brush tools, and played with opacity, dodge and burn tools. Enjoy~

I should be angry... I've only had my macbook for one year, and now it is dying.... I have no backup for any of my pictures, projects, whatsoever... Now I'm on my old laptop which I have given to my mom so that she could play GoStop (Korean poker card game. I think Japanese ppl play it too... I'm not sure which country it is originally played in) and watch Korean dramas online. Agh... I'll have to take my macbook in... good thing it is covered under the Apple Care Protection program... but all of my files will be lost, I think, because I googled to diagnose my macbook's clicking noises and grey screen with a flashing folder & a question mark in the center... Its future doesn't look good...

I'm fine though, surprisingly... I'm not kicking things around or punching pillows. I'm rather calm. Instead, I am blogging about this, because I figured that I needed to post something... So this picture here is a project I've started doing on Adobe Photoshop a couple of weeks ago... in which I will probably never finish... and, thankfully, I have its last stage uploaded on my Photobucket account... (I think I was trying to show a friend evidence of my productivity last week or so...) and I am promising myself to be productive tonight~ YESSss!! Recently I've just been working like crazy at Sky Fusion Wasabi... I'm stressed out already that I don't have enough stress to stress about anything else, for instance my dying macbook... haha, I hope that made a little bit of sense...

Here's another iscribble I did with Sam. It was really fun doing this... it takes a lot of warming up in order to get the hang of this painting program. Drawing on iscribble is an inexpensive way to sketch things and play with colors without having to use markers, paints, or any materials... Haha, it's my excuse for not working on an amazing something on Photoshop... Anyway, I really like the character I've drawn here... I want to use her for a comic... One reason I cannot sleep>> thinking up of stories with this character, ahahaha... ahhh...

I sketched my friend Jenny while she was studying. Usually when people are embarrassed being drawn I would feel embarrassed too, ahahaha... so it was kind of hard to draw Jenny... besides the fact she kept on moving and doing things with her hands, including biting the end of her pen... Yayyyy~ So I got a new job painting murals at given job sites. I am so happy that I got this opportunity because it is an art related job and it is very fun. So much better than waitress-ing!! I just finished this room today. It is the nursery of a pretty awesome place for kids called Tutor Time. Hopefully I'll be assigned more rooms~

I traced all of the drawings onto the walls first with an overhead projector. I was given the drawings and I placed them wherever I wanted to paint them.. The drawings are not of my own. My job was to basically color everything in with my painting skills.... ahhh I'm falling asleeep... and almost dropped my laptop...

A character sketch for Smile, my mini-comic. He is the loser boxer who starts believing in tooth fairies when he felt like giving up on life, eh heh...
I drew this actually during a class in April or May. I always found it funny how teachers pronounced Autumn's name. Her Korean name is Aurum, but in English it sounds like Autumn. I guess Autumn was telling me her father kind of messed up her name on some paper work when she was transferring to the school as an international student and now teachers like to pronounce her name as Ahhroom. It makes me giggle whenever professors take roll for attendance. The weird and funny looking one in the drawing here is me, saying "I am hungry" in Korean. Autumn responds with "Oh really." This is a true story, ahaha...

I don't know what was on my mind, but I sketched this while waiting for Sam. It's kind of weird... Some things I like about it, some things I don't, hahaha...

Wait~ actually this is asketch I've done on a piece of ripped paper... I rather like it, so I am posting it on this blog. My boyfriend suggested me to draw Chun Li from Street Fighter to pass the time while waiting for him to get off of work. I added Alpha Ken, heh heh... I love his long blonde hair in Street Fighter Alpha. I've grown up with Street Fighter, so these are my favorite classic characters ^-^.

Now that I've finished my summer class (Comics & Sequential Art) I have more time for things, yahooo~! Since I've finished the comics class I've also gained a mini-comic... I feel so good about it too, because it is actually a finished comic and a good portfolio piece, I think... I've always dreamed of actually having a comic... and it's come true although it's a non-profitable comic, eh heh. It is my first, I guess, besides the fan art comics I did back in junior high. Those were pretty crappy, but I still have them because it is amazing to look at my progress~

I xeroxed about 20 copies, 20 crappy copies to be more specific (considering how I am a student trying to save money *ahem*), and I'm giving them to my class mates, friends, family and people that I work with. If YOU want one, be sure to ask! I am thinking of making higher quality versions though... maybe even a colored version, ahaha, it's doable... I have a month and a 1/2 to do what I want, so I have time, yayy. Talking with a couple of friends, I may even try selling it on eBay? Haha, I probably won't... But considering how much work and sleepless nights I've put into this project, I must make better reproductions of it first...

Ah, anyway, I have some sketches that I want to post---> my evidence of productivity. I don't really want to post my comic here, but I'll reveal a few pages, hehe...

On Monday, I'm starting my new job! It is pretty awesome because it is art related and I'll be doing something I pretty much enjoy doing and get paid for it. I'll be painting murals at various job sites, I am hoping. Currently I'll be painting rooms in Tutor Time, a children's daycare center still under construction. It is looking really good too. I am so excited! I'll also be working with a couple of professional painters, including a friend that also took the comics class. I am so grateful for Lawrence. He has no idea how appreciative I am of him!! His stuff is also all kinds of awesome, so I am pretty nervous. I hope I'll do fine, eh heh heh... I'm glad the boss from AZ Wall Artist is having me scheduled with him for the first day, ahaha... I'm soooo excited!! I'm still working at Sky Fusion Wasabi (Teppan Yaki and Sushi Bar restaurant), as well, agh... so I guess I am not free as you may think, haha... At least I am posting now!! YES!!

Since June 9th I've been taking a summer class on comics and sequential art. So far it is pretty awesome, but lot of work. --- ahhh~ but it doesn't compare to my younger brother's summer classes on vector calculus and physics--- ewww... Anyway, by the end of the class we are to have a completed mini-comic of about 15 or so pages. It's kind of sad how I'm taking this class in order to be productive, but at least it's working and I've been learning quite a bit- so it is anything but a waste of time. I'm so excited to see everybody's comics!! Agh, but I really can't see myself finishing all of this in one more week~ AHhhHH!! But it will happen, because it will have to.

The story that I am cramming into this mini-comic is about a boxer who decided to believe in tooth fairies when he almost gave up on life and handsomeness after he lost a match. Of course, there's a tooth fairy--- however she gets her wings damaged and befriends with the boxer who cared for her.

AHHHH~ I'm falling asleep!! Hopefully I'll be posting some more...

Sunomono~ 3D!!

YEahhhh~ I made Sunomono out of Sculpey, its armature made out of foil... This was made for the final assignment for Illustration Studio 2, taught by Ellen McMahon. We get to choose doing either an illustration, sequential piece, or a 3D sculpture based on a character or character development, or whatever, ahaha... Since I was making a little story for my Pics and Words class, I decided it was fun to incorporate what I was doing in that class for this final assignment. Ahaha... it took me a while to get me motivated on this project the night before it was due, so I decided to take a nap. That nap turned into a full night of sleep... Oh, geez, so I missed my first class that next morning to work on it for some two or three hours... I'm pretty happy with how it turned out... ahahaaa... ahhhh... >_<;;;

This book is my solution to the final assignment to end the semester to our Pics and Words class taught by David Christiana. I had to make sure there is a theme, plot, character & etc. within an illustration or an illustration with text... haha, I decided to do a book without text, using the accordion fold, hence the story is told purely by the imagery. I did all of the drawings with Adobe Photoshop, then I printed them out and colored the pages with ink and Copic markers. Although it may be hard to make sense out of it for some, like my teacher, heh heh... I'm glad some people did without me having to explain it all myself...

Here is the cover--- I named this little cheesy story "Sunomono," named after the little monster character, who is actually a very big, gentle swamp creature. I kind of accidently titled it "Sunomomo," ahaha, because I was realllly tired when doing this (during an all-nighter) and must have thought of my dog Momo... Sunomono means cucumber salad in Japanese, hehe...

Okay, so I kind of started the story as though it is starting in the middle... I forgot the Latin term for it... ahaha... You can imagine that there was a conflict between this couple. The girl's heart is torn in half because of the jerk... So she is feeling frail and vulnerable like a piece of paper... T_T

SO he just walks away from her, the Jerk!! The girl is left motionless not knowing what to do with herself...

She cries... T_T

She runs away crying and ends up at a swamp! In the distance she sees a strange looking swamp creature.

Oh, she's not scared at all~ this swamp creature is kind of cute... He may not be able to articulate anything... but he makes her smile... His name is Sunomono.

They have fun~ full of bliss~ <3

Uh ohhhh, here comes the jerk of a boyfriend, now ex-boyfriend... but he's in store for some doom... so the girl has nothing to worry about...

Aieee Yahhh~ I haven't been really good about updating this blog... and I know only a few people who check every so often--- I give many thanks to those who are bored enough to do so~

It is already summer vacation... Classes are done, finished, and I am rather proud of myself for doing well~ YAayyyy~ Sadly I didn't update this blog as much as I have wanted to... but since I have all the time in the world for the next couple of weeks I'll be taking pictures of my illustration pieces that I've done during the last semester... Yesss~ and actually work on stuff that are not assigned for classes...

Okay, so I wanted to do something more extreme than all of the non-extreme things I've done with my dull life... I wanted to do an internship during this summer... I only submitted to one--- Pixar Animation Studios--- but sadly my lack of effort was denied... At least I tried, ahaha... But it didn't really make me feel all too good about myself--- Plus, I felt pressured~ because my parents were hassling me, and some of my friends believed that I'd make it, and my coworkers at the restaurant have little faith in me being an art major... Anyway, I'm left with no internship... so now I'm feeling nauseous because I'm now in my last year of college~ and people have been asking me and joking with me---> "So, what are you doing after school?" I work with three guys- and when they ask me- they answer it themselves with something like, "Oh, she'll be working at a slaughterhouse..." I don't remember... Anyhow, I really don't know... Right now- I just want to live life simply- work hard on projects that are assigned to me (I wish that is the way how my future job will be oriented), have good times with friends, and just be in love, haha. I know in a year or so that these will be unrealistic... after college everything is going to change... Currently I have the entire world before me and I have so many options, but I feel as though I'm not progressing--- time is ticking away... I'm a bit scared...maybe I'm worrying too much---

But I AM going to be productive! YEah!! On the brighter side, hehe, I'll be taking a summer class, Comics and Sequential Art... It's going to be a blast... I'll be with my favorite peers from my previous classes.... so I'm excited for that... I'll be more active and in more practice than ever this summer... I'm feeling it... Every semester I'm feeling as though I am gradually improving... hopefully it will be going in a faster pace... and hopefully someone out there, maybe a millionaire, will notice me, ahahahahaaaaaa agghhhh... or not... heh heh... I just need to remember that everything will be alright... no worrrrriiieeeesss... yessssssss...

And now I am smelling Momo's poop... my puppy still poops in the same wrong place... stupid puppy... but I gotta' love her... *sigh*

Here is my depiction of moldy oranges... At first I was doing a still life of a peeled orange with water colors... When I was picking up another orange I realized it was moldy--- so I decided to draw it/abstract the moldiness with some graphic elements (hence the dark curvy lines)... With mold, I thought of life and death, so I drew figures out of this seemingly mundane object (our assignment was to illustrate a mundane object- to make it interesting), as if life is being born from the dying orange... Yeah, I tried... haha... This assignment was actually due some month ago... but I was lazy to scan it... Here it is finally... Hopefully I'll have more work to post soon...

I say it's a good day because I did artwork... That's always good~ Thennnn I had a very good lunch and pleasant chat with Ann and Jenny.

Ann---> Jenny's old roommate from a year ago. She's the nicest person ever and one of those people who I look up to. I volunteered to have my teeth looked at by her because she was going to school for dental hygiene, haha, good times. Anyway she's in her thirties (although she doesn't look it), married to a successful guy, has a nice house, watches Ninja Warrior= awesome...

I met Jenny through working at Sky Blue Wasabi and she has become one of my closest friends... I don't know what I'd do without her. *sigh* I love them!!

Pero mi madre consistently gave me... talk. Crap, whatever... Usually she nags me about something at least once a day or whatever, it's alright, but today I got so much packed in one day... ;_; All I can do is give her the nod of my big head.

"It's embarrassing... You're spending money on a Korean class, and you don't practice it... There are students who work 3 jobs, go to school and know 9 different languages." I can never use an excuse like "I am too busy... Everything is piling up all at once..." Haha...

"Marry an accomplished engineer/doctor/lawyer..." I can't use "I'm not going to marry anytime soon," or "I'm not going to marry... forever..." She fires back with "Then you'll have no money."

Then there's "your legs are really short!" ten times in a row... and there's more, but I don't feel like discussing it--- -here- at least... haha... Well, no need for self-pity~

Here is what I am going to submit for the BEASTS! Book Two. It's more or less a contest where anybody can submit an art piece of a unique beast of folklore and only so many can be chosen to be published in this awesomeness. It's a good opportunity for exposure... I chose to do the kumiho from Korean folklore--- The kumiho is, according to whatever I found on Google, a nine-tailed fox, a fox that has lived over 1,000 years, that seduces men and kills them... Usually the kumiho morphs into a beautiful woman and bites the necks of humans--- just like a vampire, except kumihos are more pretty and have nine tails.

I believe Sam and Natasha are more capable of producing awesome artworks, but they're not doing it?? Without Sam I wouldn't be doing this... I almost gave up... but I got it done, yay!!

I also scanned my sketch before the final thing... Hehe...

I used mixed media: acrylic, gouache, water color, ink, markers...

Post Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day almost went too well at school. I didn't feel like painting yesterday morning because I already painted 6 self-portraits prior to class--- then we didn't do any painting--- we just did lot of talking and watched painting demonstrations.

Thhheeennn I ran to my car with my boyfriend to lead him to my homemade box of chocolates to put in his refrigerator--- hopefully he'll take a picture of it because it was really arts-and-craftsy, cute and cheesy... It was my first time ever to go all out on Valentines day for a guy... We planned on doing stuff on Sunday, because he had to work last night and had class until 5pm... but I wanted to give him something anyway... I felt so silly...

Anyway... Then we had to hurry to go to our classes---

My class had technical difficulties so my history class ended oh so early around 2:30 pm. It was such a weird day for me... And I had to wait until 5 for Sam, because of the Art gallery opening of the drawings... But my friend, Autumn, and I went to the mall to find her boyfriend a box of chocolates--- we went and looked around at stuff so it killed time for both of us until 5... haha... and we ate tiramisu gelato. Good stuff... Happy Valentines Day, haha... kind of... ~both of our boyfriends were busy... Anyway, around 5 I hung out with Sam and we went to the art gallery downtown, looked at some drawings... Mine was selling for $40. It gave me an idea of how art pricing goes... Yayyyy... Hmm... I really want to go to more art shows...

There are some contests coming up--- so I'll be sure to work on those submissions.

Oh, and I give many thanks to all who visits and reads my ramblings and for the comments from two entries ago. They made me happy~ ^_^

I went with Sam, my 남자친구, to Phoenix ComicCon, a comic convention that shows off artists, art, comics, and stuff for geeks and aspiring illustrators/artists like Sam and I. It was a little overwhelming at first because I really don't know all too much about American comics and Sam is a fan of some of the comic artists there that I really don't know. I'm actually more into the Asian visual culture, Korean manhwa, and Japanese manga art and the like. They had some anime stuff there too, but I felt kind of behind in that genre as well. I was also overwhelmed by all of the people dressed up like characters from anime, movies, games, and comics--- they were crazy and some were scary... Haha, but it was fun nevertheless... Of all the crazy stuff they had there--- I only bought a miniature Final Fantasy IV mystery boxed figurine... haha... and a Street Fighter energy drink with Ken on it, and a cute button... I wish I got more souvenirs (but I'm a poor art student... bahhh)... Anyway, I'll be saving up for the next Comic Con and hopefully I'll have something to show, like a comic perhaps, and have my own booth. Oh, that is one dream...

Ohhhhh, Valentines Day is coming up~ Woooo... Over the weekend I was told it was mandatory to work on that night, but I refused, because I'm going to an art show, YEAHHHHhhhh~~~!! I had a very good excuse... I'm curious to see how much my drawing is going to be priced... but I am thinking everybody's is going to be along the same price range according to what the teacher said this morning. Plus they're having free-ish substantial dinner provided there at the gallery, I suppose, so no boyfriend buying dinner and no girlfriend buying dinner either, hahaha... How lame, right? Hmm... anyway... I'm excited...

Here, my illustration studio class had to do a scientific illustration of an assigned bird... I got the ring-billed seagull... I managed to get assigned with a dirty, ugly seagull, ah well... I'm starting to warm up to this bird... I was having problems with my printer and ended up with five copies laying around my room of this bird... agh... bahhh... Then I found an old scan of a drawing I gave to a friend on my parents' old computer (which happens to be hooked up with a nice scanner). It's a fan art of Vincent Valentine from Final Fantasy VII, done some time in 2006.

So school started and I haven't really accomplished much... But NOW I have this sudden boost of energy to make art! I'm so excited~ I did this drawing last night and finished it around 4 in the morning. I was crazy and kind of high on caffein... it was also crazy that I already had a night like this and today is only the fourth day of classes... This here was an assignment for my illustration studio class due and critiqued todayyy. These drawings are going to be submitted/donated to an un-juried/fund-raising event exhibition, Night of 1,000 Drawings. I at least scanned my picture before giving it away... ((((agh, but the scanned image is different and not as good as the actual picture--- It was kind of too big to scan so this is just 8x11 of 11x14 of it... Ah well, it's posted up on here anyway...)))) haha... Anyway--- I'm excited~ This will be the first time my drawing will be in a gallery in my college years, hahaha... ahhhh

Now I'll try to catch up on sleep. Hopefully tomorrow I'll wake up early enough to do my homework... Hmm... Blehhhh...

Oh my gosh~! I did it... I actually dedicated five straight hours toward a drawing!! >> my whole Saturday on drawing!! I've had only corn bread, green tea, corn bread and corn bread... Now... I can't type... Agh... I used Adobe Photoshop CS3 (about time too) with a WACOM tablet. It was difficult and it still needs practice but it is hundreds better than using a mouse to draw on the computer. I'm pretty happy with the result- my character design of Lona, haha... yeah... As you can probably see, it is based off of the sketch I've done yesterday... Hopefully I'll be working on some more drawings... and not eat anymore corn bread...

Gosh~ It has been taking a little too long for me to just get started on any drawing--- even a doodle... whyyyyyyy??? But once I got into drawing this little thing here, it took me the whole break time of 1.5 hours to note/draw these things out. I have a funnyish story in my head... I don't know how to write--- so this plot summary/synopsis, or whatever it is, is not very good... But I'm excited that I actually have something working in my head, yeahhhhyyyyy~!!!

I drew this based on characters from an online RPG forum... The girl has a fish mask on, I think... ha ha...

This was cut out (along the lines cutout), I don't remember why... But I thought it was kind of neat... weird...

I was proud of my zombie... It's always nice to draw a zombie to pour out all of those dreadful feelings, hahaha... *cough* Below: Pencil drawing.

Well~ 2008, for me, started a little rough (not too badly)--- but I'm content regardless of the unsuccessful shopping with my mom amongst crazy sales and crazy people. We just didn't buy anything and wasted lot of time. My mom was a little unhappy and I was cranky... haha... Well, I worked the night prior, and I'm still aching all over...

Anywayyyyyy, all I really need to do is to get my act together and get going on anything (drawing and planning ahead for LIFE)... I unburied some forgotten drawings that I've kind of liked and did when I was drawing more frequently. I want to use the top picture for my comic----ish, hahaha... for just an idea of what my characters are going to look like... yayyy...

I don't know why I'm complaining--- I planned to work more anyway since I have winter break still... but nowadays I dread going to work--- there is sooo much negative energy there, haha... We're a small restaurant but we manage to do teppan yaki with only one teppan chef, have 6 dining tables, having one kitchen cook, one dish washer, and one sushi chef... Everybody's always working extra hard, and nobody can get a day off. Hence everybody's cranky and angry. I don't know how long this will keep up... Next week I'm going to be working three double shifts (six shifts- We open for lunch from 11-2 and for dinner from 5 to 10-11), Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night... Ahhhh~ I need to draw more too,gah!! >_<

To get myself focused on what I really want to do -beyond NOW-, I'm doing a series of short comics, yay~ I'm trying to get rid of my habit of being lazy, eating pie, and playing video games by putting some time, and gradually more time into reawakening my passion, haha, in drawing and art in general. I've realized that over the past few years I haven't really been a passionate artist--- I'm going to school for illustration, but just this past semester I finally learned how unfired up I may seem compared to others. Agh... However~ I'll be strong-- I may be a little behind, but I'll find my wayyy hey heyyy~~
